Scientific Name:
Eupleres goudotii
The bizarre Falanouc of Madagascar is a glimpse into the evolutionary process. It is a carnivore that specialises in feeding on earthworms and other small invertebrates and as a consequense has greatly reduced teeth and jaws as well as enlarged foreclaws. Maybe sometime in the future it look more like other worm eaters such as the Long-beaked Echidnas of New Guinea or the Kiwi.
This painting is from the book and exhibition, 'Astonishing Animals'.
